Stensland Family Farms and Creamery Honored with Iowa Venture Award
Des Moines, IA - The Iowa Area Development Group (IADG), on behalf of Iowa’s rural electric cooperatives, municipal utilities, and independent telecommunication companies, honored eight distinguished Iowa companies with the Iowa Venture Award at a luncheon held in conjunction with the Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives’ annual meeting.
Stensland Family Farms, established in 1915, is a family-owned and operated multi-generational farm located just outside of Larchwood, Iowa. The Stensland’s farm over 1,500 acres of organic cropland and operate a 200-cow dairy that is the basis for their newest endeavor, Stensland Creamery. The herd, which is milked robotically, has been bred to produce A2 beta-casein protein, and their products are rich in Omega 3’s through the incorporation of flax meal in their ration. The milk produced on their dairy is used for freshly bottled milk, ice cream, aged cheese and cheese curds. Their products are sold at three company stores in Sioux Falls and can also be purchased directly at the farm where visitors and tour groups can experience the farm operation. Lyon County Rural Electric Cooperative nominated Stensland Family Farms for the Iowa Venture Award.

Lyon Rural Electric Cooperative has partnered with IADG and USDA Rural Development in applying for and receiving one zero pass thru loan of $135,000 and two grants totaling $430,000 from the USDA Rural Economic Development Grant and Loan Program. The zero pass thru loan was lent to the company included in the application for a ten year period at zero interest. The grants were matched with 20% matching funds to create the Lyon Rural Electric Cooperative Rural Economic Development Revolving Loan Fund.
